History of Golf
The origin of the game of golf has storied past in regards to the history of golf. Around 1457 the Scots played the game of golf on seaside courses called links. Scotland is the home of the world's oldest golf course called St. Andrews, which is where the PGA golf tournament THE BRITISH OPEN is played every year. James VI of Scotland, was attracted to the sport of golf during the 17th century which led to the establishing of the game in Great Britain. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews was founded in 1754. During the 1800's the gutta-percha ball, or "gutty ball" replaced the feather-filled ball that had been used for centuries up to that time. In 1860 the first British Open was played in Prestwick, Scotland and was open to both professionals and amateurs the following year. The first golf club founded in 1873 in North America was in Canada and called the Royal Montreal Club. The first 18-hole course in the United States founded in 1893 was called the Chicago Golf Club which was located near Wheaton, Illinois.
