HORSE RACING HALL OF FAME

The following is information on the Brief History of the Horse Racing Hall of Fame, The Hall of Fame Nomination Committee, Selection Criteria for Induction into Hall of Fame, All about The Final Vote for Induction into Hall of Fame and Induction Day.

A Brief History of the Horse Racing Hall of Fame

The National Museum of Racing was incorporated in historic Saratoga Springs, New York, in 1950. In 1955 the Museum moved to its present site on Union Avenue, and the Hall of Fame was created to recognize and honor deserving horses, jockeys, and trainers. 
Over the past 40 years the selection process and criteria have been fine-tuned, but the Hall of Fame remains devoted to the original three categories.


The Hall of Fame Nomination Committee 

The Nomination Committee consists of racing historians and prominent media representatives who have been asked to prepare a ballot of candidates for the Hall of Fame. The initial slate of eligible candidates is proposed by members of the Nomination Committee as well as a larger Voting Panel of racing media representatives from throughout the United States. The Nomination Committee then votes to determine three nominees per category. 
The categories under consideration each year usually include Contemporary runners of both sexes, Horses of Yesteryear, jockeys, and trainers. Periodically historic jockeys and trainers, as well as representatives from the steeplechase world, are honored. 


Selection Criteria for Induction into Hall of Fame


To earn a place on the annual ballot, nominees must meet the following criteria: 


Thoroughbreds become eligible when five calendar years have elapsed between their final racing year and their year of nomination; 

Eligible Thoroughbreds are classified as Contemporary Male or Female if they have been retired between five and 25 years. Horses that have been retired for more than 25 years are classified as Horses of Yesteryear; 

Active jockeys become eligible after riding for 15 years (any interruptions in their careers for injury not being counted against them); 

Active trainers become eligible after 25 years as licensed Thoroughbred trainers; 

The 15 and 25 year requirements may be waived for retired jockeys and trainers, but a five-year waiting period is then observed before they become eligible. In cases of fragile health, the Hall of Fame Committee may request that the five-year waiting period be waived at the discretion of the Executive Committee. 

The Final Vote


Brief biographies of all nominees are incorporated on ballots and mailed to the Voting Committee. These men and women have the responsibility to elect one candidate from each category. 
Each spring when the final votes have been tallied, the announcement of new inductees is made. In recent years, this announcement has occurred during Derby Week. 


Induction Day


On a summer morning in August, the new inductees, current Hall of Famers, and racing fans gather on the Museum's lawn to celebrate the achievements of new members. New plaques are unveiled in the Hall of Fame and awarded to each inductee. This ceremony is free and open to the general public. 

Each member is listed with the year of his/her induction to the Hall of Fame or in the case of horses the year of induction and the year foaled.
